Ibotta: What is It?
Ibotta is a cashback app that partners with brands and retailers to offer rebates and discounts on purchased goods and services. That means that you receive discounts or cash back when you buy certain goods at certain retailers, think of it as digital couponing. Now before you start thinking this is sketchy, (Spoiler Alert: Its’ not), check out the companies history and partners.
The company was founded by Bryan Leach who incorporated the company in 2011 and launched the official app in 2012. The company currently is affiliated with 300+ retailers. Some of the most recognizable are Amazon, Target, Walmart, Sears, Whole Foods, Home Depot, and Bed Bath & Beyond. Ibotta is a legit company that can help you save money on your everyday purchases.

How Does It Work
One of the best things about Ibotta is that it’s super easy to use. You don’t need to be tech savvy at all! The very first thing that you need to do is download the Ibotta app. Once the app is downloaded you will need to create a profile.
Fun fact: Setting up your profile is the hardest part! That’s how easy it is to use.
Now that you’ve created a profile it’s time to go shopping. Inside the app click on the “Find offers” tab at the bottom left and search retailers by category, it will look like the picture below.
If you are going grocery shopping then select “grocery” and you will find all nearby stores that are affiliated with Ibotta. After you select a store you will see all the items that store is offering cash back on.
From this point simply scroll through and select/add the items that you are going to purchase. This will move those items into the “My offers” tab. You will see a plus sign next to the offers, click that to add that item (picture below).
Note: Sometimes when selecting an offer the app will prompt you with some form of advertisement. This is normal, just wait for the ad to end and resume.
After you’ve added all the necessary offers and completed your shopping go to the register and check out like normal. Take your receipt and click the “Redeem” tab, from here you will be prompted to take a clear picture of the entire receipt or just a picture of the QR code on the receipt. Within 24 hours your Ibotta account will be credited with cash back from all qualifying purchases that you made.
That explanation was a little lengthy but the process is really easy, so just to reiterate:
- Download the Ibotta app and create a profile.
- Select “Find offers”, choose a shopping category and the location you are shopping at.
- Add all the items that you plan on buying.
- Take a picture of the receipt.
- Wait for that money to roll in.
How Do I Get Paid
Now that you’ve used the app and have a cash balance on your account, how do you get paid. Well it’s first worth noting that you can not withdraw funds from your account until you have accumulated at least $20 (which is easy). If you have more than $20 accumulated you have the option to be paid via Paypal, Venmo, or store gift cards.
